Ukranian Cultural Heritage Village
Bless the Ukraine!! It saved me from golf.........
About ten minutes up the road from Elk Island is this spectacular place.........
The buildings have been moved from all over Alberta.....and placed in an historical lineage.......
The really wonderful thing about this place is that it's "alive"......in each of the buildings are people role playing the lives of the actual people that lived in those buildings....
We wandered in to the first house, the glorious aroma of fresh perogies being cooked & were greeted with " come in, come in.....my cousin Lizzie has just stepped out, but please come in.....where are you from?"
After we had replied "Australia".....the response was "such a long boat journey, you must be very tired.....please sit, sit.."
It was a little off putting at first......wanting to look around the house , but feeling very uncomfortable as we felt like we were invading someone's home...?
By the time we had wandered through several more houses, we were well into the swing of it!
At the police station we were asked if we wanted to make a complaint, so we made one against a pair of unruly girls that seemed to be following us!!! Sadly, they don't put minors in the lock - up!
It was a fantastic experience to get a "real" taste of what life had been like, at varying time stages, for the Ukranians that came & settled in Alberta.
The craftsmanship of the log houses & barns was incredible, with both Vin & I deciding we want a barn like that at home.! Now we just have to work out how to build it!?!
