Elk Island......
Now for the rest of the story..........
We had a fantastic weekend at Elk Island........far enough away (about an hour & half from home) to feel like we were on holidays.....close enough, that if it all went to hell...
Well.... you get the picture!
We arrived on the Thursday afternoon/evening & there was no-one else around......too good to be true......the camp attendant told us " they would all start rolling in tomorrow" and roll in they did!
We had Thursday night to ourselves......and woke to campers & HUGE RV's everywhere!!! One crew even kicked their generator on at about 8am.......man!!!
This is supposed to be camping....you know ......roughing it a little?! Not for the Canucks.......these guys are hard core........take everything, enjoy or go home!!!
The people that pulled in next to us also had a tent trailer......
By the look of it ....newer, more features......and then they started to unpack.......OMG!!!!
Solar panels, flip down bar-b-q on the side of the trailer, slide out storage units.........Holly was suddenly looking like the poor cousin, from the wrong side of the tracks......
Proudly, we stood & introduced ourselves.......
Of course they were lovely! We may be looking through rose coloured glasses, but.......we are yet to met a "bad" Canadian .......I am sure they exist, because we all have 'em......waiting to find one though.......
So...back to the trailer stand off.........
After checking out each others 'rigs'........the opening line was......."where in Australia are you from?"......
The couple next to us & their two kids had spent some time in WA.......from then on ......we were "mates"....even though I think they pitied us , our poor comparison of a trailer......
On Friday morning I wandered down to get some water.......rain, or was it sleet?.....it was white & sticking slightly to my coat........glass half full, I told myself it was rain....
We spent most of that first morning slothing in the camper (its got a heater!!!)......the weather cleared about lunch time so we went exploring.
We walked the Simmons trail looking for wildlife. Saw lots of poop, but no critters, so we returned to the trailer, hungry & thirsty. Hunger was assuaged by roasting 'weiners' (Canadian sausage sizzle), thirst slaked by surreptitious beers in the camper. There is a" liquor ban" in all national parks on long weekends (WHAT!!!), so we were very discrete (much to utter disgust of Josie & Till, who knew about the ban....bloody kids !?). I mean..really...camping/long weekend/no beer......these things do not fit together!!!
Once sated with weiners & beer......we indulged in another Canadian National Dish...."s'mores".....
S'mores consist of toasted marshmallows, sandwiched between sweet crackers, with chocolate...........the taste of Canadian summer! We're addicted!!! Ridiculously good!
Saturday was spent doing more walking (necessary after the weiners & s'mores!)...........and a trip to Lamont for supplies (Yogi's bottle shop?)........this is where we found the Limo graveyard (see below). After lunch......Vin ditched us girls so he could go walking & possibly see some wildlife.........
Come Sunday morning, the girls were keen to do something else.....Till even going so far as to suggest golf!!??!!
Thank goodness it didn't come to that...........saved by the Ukranians!!! (see next page)..........
